PurrQuery

Privacy Policy

This policy explains what PurrQuery collects, why we collect it, how long we keep it and what you can ask us to do with it. It is written to be read, not to be survived.

Last updated

The short version

  • We collect an email address if you subscribe, and your name, email and message if you write to us. Nothing else.
  • We use Microsoft Clarity to see, in aggregate, how visitors use this site. There are no advertising scripts on our pages.
  • Some links go to Amazon, and we earn a commission on qualifying purchases. If you follow one, Amazon may set its own cookies.
  • We never sell or share your details, and you can have them deleted by asking.

The full detail is below. Where the two differ, the full text is what applies.

1. What this policy covers

This policy explains what PurrQuery does with personal information when you use the site. It covers purrquery.com and everything published on it.

PurrQuery is free and has no accounts. You can read every guide and use every tool without giving us anything at all. The only information we hold is what you actively send us.

2. What we collect

There are exactly two ways you can give us personal information, and one thing recorded automatically.

  • If you subscribe to updates: your email address. Nothing else. Not your name, and not where you subscribed from.
  • If you use the contact form: your name, email address, the subject you chose and the message you wrote.
  • Automatically: our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, which include IP addresses and browser details, in the ordinary course of running the server. Your IP is also used briefly to rate-limit our forms so they cannot be flooded.

3. Why we hold it, and on what basis

The email address you subscribe with is used to send the updates you asked for, and for nothing else. The basis for that is your consent, which you give by subscribing and can withdraw at any time.

What you send through the contact form is used to read and answer your message. The basis for that is our legitimate interest in replying to people who write to us. You would reasonably expect a reply.

Server logs and rate limiting exist to keep the site available and to stop abuse. That is also a legitimate interest, and the data is not used to build any profile of you.

4. Cookies

PurrQuery sets two strictly necessary, first-party cookies. One keeps track of your session; the other carries a token that protects our forms against cross-site request forgery. Neither identifies you, follows you between sites, or is used for advertising.

We also use Microsoft Clarity, a session-recording and heatmap tool, to understand how visitors move through and use this site: where people click, how far they scroll, and which pages get read. Clarity sets a couple of its own cookies (including one named _clck and one named _clsk) to recognize repeat visits to this site, and it processes your IP address and browser details as part of that. We do not use it to identify you personally, and Microsoft's own privacy documentation, published at clarity.microsoft.com/privacy, covers exactly what it collects and how it is retained.

There is no Google Analytics, no advertising pixel, and no other tracker beyond Clarity on our pages. Even the fonts are served from our own domain. Affiliate links are the one exception to watch for: following one takes you to the retailer's site, which sets its own cookies, as described below.

Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser; the others expire on their own schedule. You can block or delete cookies at any time in your browser settings, usually under Privacy or Site data. Blocking our two necessary cookies will stop the forms from working, but every guide and tool will still load.

There is no cookie consent banner today, since the cookies above are the only ones set. If that changes, for advertising cookies in particular, you will be asked before any non-essential cookie beyond what is described here is set.

5. Advertising and affiliate links

PurrQuery is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Affiliate links are labeled where they appear, and they cost you nothing extra.

Third parties, including Amazon, may place and read cookies on your browser, or use web beacons and similar technologies, to collect information when you follow an affiliate link, so that a purchase can be credited to us. That happens on the retailer's site, not on ours, and it is governed by the retailer's own privacy notice, for Amazon at amazon.com/privacy. We never receive your name, address, payment details or anything you buy; Amazon reports only anonymous totals of qualifying sales.

There are no display ads on PurrQuery today, and no advertising cookies are set by our pages. If advertising such as Google AdSense is introduced, third-party vendors, including Google, will use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this site or to other sites, and this policy will be updated to name the networks involved before they go live, with consent requested first wherever the law requires it.

You can opt out of personalised advertising by Google at any time through Google Ads Settings at adssettings.google.com. Advertising from many other vendors can be turned off at aboutads.info/choices, and in the UK and EU at youronlinechoices.eu. Opting out stops the personalisation, not the ads themselves.

6. Who else sees it

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with anyone for their own marketing.

The site runs on hosting provided by Hostinger, which necessarily processes the data stored on the server on our behalf. Beyond that, we pass your information to no one, except where we are legally required to.

Following an affiliate link sends you to that retailer, such as Amazon, which then collects information under its own privacy notice. We do not pass it anything about you.

7. How long we keep it

Subscriber email addresses are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you. If you unsubscribe we keep a record that the address opted out, so a later sign-up form cannot quietly add you back.

Contact messages are kept while we deal with them and for a reasonable period afterwards, so we have context if you write again. Ask us to delete a message and we will.

Server logs are retained by our host under their own schedule, which is short and measured in weeks rather than years.

8. Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. If you are in the UK or EU, the GDPR gives you those rights explicitly, along with the right to object to processing, to request a copy of your data, and to complain to your data protection authority. If you are in California, the CCPA gives you comparable rights, including the right to know and to delete. Note that we have no personal information to sell in the first place.

To exercise any of them, write to us at the address below. We do not require you to create an account or fill in a form to make a request, and we will not charge you for it.

Unsubscribing is simpler still: every update we send includes a one-click unsubscribe link.

9. How it is protected

The whole site is served over HTTPS, so anything you send us is encrypted in transit. Stored data sits in a database that is not publicly reachable, and access to it is limited to what is needed to run the site.

No system is perfectly secure, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can say is that we hold as little as possible, which is the most effective protection available: information that was never collected cannot be exposed.

10. Sensitive information

Please do not send us sensitive personal information through the contact form or by email: health details about yourself, financial or government ID numbers, or anything about your religion, politics, ethnicity or sexuality. We do not need any of it to answer a question about your cat.

If something like that reaches us anyway, it is handled under this policy and deleted once your message has been dealt with.

11. Children

PurrQuery is written for adults looking after cats, and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16.

If you believe a child has sent us their details, tell us and we will delete them.

12. Where your data is held

The site is hosted by Hostinger on servers in the United States, in Massachusetts, and backups are held in Boston. If you are visiting from outside the United States, the information you send us is processed there.

Pages are delivered through Hostinger's content delivery network, which has servers in many countries and passes your request on to ours. It handles the page you are reading, not the information you send us through a form.

The same protections described in this policy apply wherever you are reading from.

13. Changes to this policy

We will update this policy when what we do changes, as we did when Amazon affiliate links were added, and will again before any advertising is introduced. The date at the top shows when the current version took effect.

If a change materially affects how we handle information you have already given us, we will make that clear rather than quietly revising the page.

14. Getting in touch

For anything about this policy, or to make a request about your data, use the contact page or email us directly. We answer these ourselves. There is no privacy department to be routed through.

  • We hold very little An email address if you subscribe, and your message if you write to us. Nothing else.
  • Nothing is sold Your details are not sold, and not shared with anyone for their own marketing.
  • You can undo it Ask us what we hold, ask for a copy, or ask us to delete it. One email is enough.

Still have a question?

If any of this is unclear, ask. We would rather explain a clause than have you guess at what it means.
